The Cape Floristic Kingdom is one of the most unique and richest floral kingdoms in the world. Fynbos (Fine bush), as it is known, thrives in the winter rainfall region of Southern Africa and is primarily made up of three dominant plant groups:The Protea family (Proteacaeae)
Ericas (Ericaceae) heath like plant
The Reed or Restios (Restionaceae)
A vast array of other plants makes up the balance. Many of these plants can be seen at Mountain Mist. In any given month, these hidden treasures will appear from nowhere to remind us of the diversity of our region
Mountain Mist is host to some very rare proteas such as the Aulax pallasia and Leucadendron discolor which thrive in these nutrient deficient soils. The mountain is made of Table Mountain sandstone, which is very porous and has thus given rise to awesome rock- scapes. A variety of succulents and xerophytes are found nestled in the rocks. Large stands of Kniphofia, Aristea, Watsonia and Dilatris and Metalasia to name but a few, can be seen. There is also an amazing colourful array of Lichens.
